Sophia L. Torres is a Founding Member and Co-Artistic
Director of Psophonia Dance Company. She has choreographed
twenty original works under Psophonia and has been recognized by
American College Dance Festival, DiverseWorks Artspace, |

and Dallas Black Dance Theatre for her innovative choreography. She
is a graduate of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts
and holds a B.F.A. in Dance from Southern Methodist University. She
has performed with many companies including the Houston Grand Opera,
the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Houston Metropolitan Dance
Company and Travesty Dance Group. Ms. Torres has worked with such
talented choreographers as Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall, Stephan
Koplowitz and Karen Stokes.
She has received the Artist Fellowship Award in Choreography and
three Artist Project Awards for arts in education programming from
Houston Arts Alliance. In 2002, Sophia
attended the American Dance Festival on scholarship at Duke
University and two years later participated in the DiverseWorks
Retreat and Creative Capital Professional Development Workshop. In
2005, she was the guest choreographer at Rice University and guest
teacher at St. John’s School and HSPVA. Ms. Torres is on faculty at
the University of Houston and is actively involved in creating
quality arts in education programming for Houston students.

Sonia
Noriega Founder
Sonia Noriega is a Founding Member and Co-Artistic
Director of Psophonia Dance Company in Houston. As Co-Artistic
Director, she creates contemporary dance works for the company
and facilitates Psophonia’s arts in education programs by

| conducting dance residencies in Houston
and Harris County area schools.
Ms. Noriega has received honors and recognition for her work
including an Emerging Artist Fellowship Award in 2004 from the
Houston Arts Alliance, L.A. DANCEFORCE
Choreography Award, and two fellowships from the American Dance
Festival at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Her
choreography has been presented with the JCC’s Choreographer’s X 6,
Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Houston Metropolitan Dance Center and
she has performed with the Houston Grand Opera, Karen Stokes
Travesty Dance Group, Hope Stone, Bessie Award winning New York
choreographer, Stephan Koplowitz.
Sonia began dancing at the age of four and has received training
from Lamar Fleming Arts Academy, Houston Ballet, Lar Lubovitch Dance
Workshop, American Dance Festival and is a graduate of the High
School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
