Residencies
Psophonia Dance Company is committed
to providing quality arts in education programs to the children
in our community. Psophonia has developed partnerships with
Young Audiences of Houston (YAH) and with Harris County
Department of Education (HCDE) to conduct dance residencies and
performances with students from elementary to high school. Most
residencies focus on arts in education curriculum. Our residency
at Gregory Lincoln Education Center explored the Solar System
through dance.
Our residency at Southmore Intermediate centered on creating a
story ballet based on Sandra Cisneros, “The House on Mango
Street.”
Still other residencies such as the one at Northbrook Middle
School are geared towards being fit for life and culminate in
student showings at the school or larger venues like Miller
Outdoor Theatre. In 2005, Psophonia conducted seven dance
residencies reaching students in Houston ISD, Spring ISD and
Pasadena ISD.
Performances
In 2006, Psophonia created a new in-school performance that
highlights Mexican heritage, traditions and culture. By building
a school show with a specific cultural link, Psophonia fulfilled
a critical need: providing well thought out in-school
performances for the largely Hispanic student population in
Houston.
Look for Psophonia in January 2007 as they link forces with
Uniquely Houston to provide 8 student matinees at the HCPA for
approximately 4,000 HISD students. Through the collaboration
with Uniquely Houston, PDC can ensure that Houston’s children
have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits provided
by experiencing the arts in a live theater setting.

What
The Schools Are Saying
| "Anyway, I think of dancing as an
art that shows exactly what you are feeling inside. I would
like to thank you for helping me discover that art that was
inside my soul." |
Melissa, 10th Grade
Student |
| "…our children who previously had
had no experience with dance, learned to express themselves in
many unique forms throughout the year… Student oral
presentation in class became much more vibrant and
artistically expressive. More importantly, the experience with
your dance company increased student self-confidence." |
